Review: Heffron Drive amazes on new ‘Happy Mistakes: Unplugged’ album (Includes first-hand account)

Heffron Drive will be performing at The Mint in Los Angeles on April 30, in support of their forthcoming studio album. This album will be released on Schmidt’s very own independent label, TOLbooth Records. It was recorded and produced in his home studio.

Happy Mistakes: Unplugged opens with their soothing title track tune “Happy Mistakes,” and it is followed by the mid-tempo and fun “Parallel.”

“Division of the Heart” is empowering, featuring infectious acoustic instrumentation. “Had To Be Panama” is equally noteworthy, especially due to its strong lyrics. “If your eyes look the same under different stars, It’s not a mistake to be where we are,” Schmidt sings.

“Nicotine” is upbeat with a powerful melody. “Passing Time” is a refreshing ballad that features a vocal cameo from band-mate Logan Henderson from Big Time Rush.

“Could You Be Home” is another acoustic ballad that Schmidt nails. “That’s What Makes You Mine” is a warm and crystalline vocal performance, where Schmidt displays his impressive falsetto. The 10-track collection closes with the poignant “Everything Has Changed,” which is perhaps the greatest vocal on the album.

The Verdict

Overall, Kendall Schmidt’s latest studio album is raw, stripped and authentic. He and Dustin Belt deliver yet again, proving that Heffron Drive is a true force to be reckoned with in the music industry. This collection showcases Schmidt’s rich and pleasant vocals in their purest form. Their fans are in for a real acoustic musical experience. It garners a solid A rating.
