Review: Glen Campbell soars on ‘I’ll Be Me’ soundtrack (Includes first-hand account)

Most recently, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” garnered a Grammy award for “Best Country Song,” and rightfully so. It is heartfelt and haunting and Campbell is able to connect with the hearts of his listeners. There are two versions included on this project, the opening track where he collaborates with The Wrecking Crew, as well as the single version, which closes the album.

The Band Perry’s rendition of “Gentle on My Mind” is soothing and pleasant, and it won a 2015 Grammy award for “Best Country Duo/Group Performance.”

His daughter Ashley Campbell makes two cameos on this album. She lends her mellifluous vocals on “Remembering,” and “Home Again” is pure and angelic. In both songs, Ashley tips her hat beautifully to her father.

Equally moving are the piano-driven tunes “All I Need Is You” and “Long Walk Home,” where his vocals are rich and captivating as ever. In addition, it includes two live performances from the Ryman Auditorium such as “Wichita Lineman” and “A Better Place.”

The Verdict

Overall, Glen Campbell’s I’ll Be Me album is a must for any traditional country music listener, or fan of the iconic “Rhinestone Cowboy.” There is a lot of heart in this album by all artists involved (Glen, The Band Perry and Ashley Campbell). It garners an A rating, and is one of those collections that deserves to stand the test of time.
