The Lomax family of Texas is responsible, beginning in 1908 through the mid 60’s, for collecting and recording 5,500 songs, stories and general oral history which would have potentially been lost to the ages. They also discovered and helped nurture the careers of blues pioneer Muddy Waters and folk and blues musician Leadbelly, both of which were inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It opens with a rich a cappella version of “Buffalo Skinners” and it is followed by “Git Along Little Dogies” and “Grey Goose.” Other noteworthy tracks include “Roosters Crow at Midnight,” “Ain’t No More Cane on This Brazos,” “Tin Maker Man” and “The Rattlesnake Song,” among many others.
The Verdict
Overall, the extensive Lomax family collections have had a profound impact on today’s music scene, and not just in the country music industry. Their is a rawness and authenticity to these classic recordings. Their music encompasses elements of rock, Americana, folk, bluegrass and adult contemporary. This CD is worth more than just a passing glance.
