On November 5, musical duo Evan + Zane performed at Chelsea Table & Stage in New York City.
They paid homage to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Radiohead, where they performed their seminal studio album OK Computer from top to bottom.
“Hey everyone, how are you doing?” Zane asked. “This is going to be fun. We are so grateful that you guys are here.”
They kicked off their set at 7:15 p.m. with the stirring “Airbag,” where Evan was able to lure their listeners in their set thanks to her crystalline vocals.
Evan noted that the last time they performed this album from start to finish was five years ago, and the only other album they performed in its entirety is Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. Evan shared that they only do albums in their entirety if they are cohesive and if they tell a story, and rightfully so. That was the case with Radiohead’s OK Computer.
Zane switched over another guitar and broke into the expressive “”Paranoid Android,” and he joined Evan on harmonies.
After a sip of red wine, Evan serenaded the audience with the atmospheric “Subterranean Homesick Alien” whose lyrics are pure poetry. “I just love the chord changes,” Zane admitted while Evan claimed this tune as one of her personal favorites on the album.
“I forget how quickly the next song comes up on the album,” Evan said with a sweet laugh about “”Exit Music (For a Film).” Her crisp voice on this song was reminiscent of Amy Lee of Evanescence (powerhouse-wise) meets the control of Sarah McLachlan.
“Are you enjoying yourselves?” Zane asked, and the crowd responded with a resounding yes. Zane stated that the song “Let Down” has math in it, and that “music can be divided infinitely.”
Evan described “Karma Police” as a “pretty well-known song” from the album, and it was just as popular with the Big Apple fans that gathered tonight at Chelsea Table.
“This is not the most appetizing part of the album,” Evan admitted, but noted that since they were doing the whole record in its entirety they had to include “Fitter Happier.”
Zane’s brother, Reeve Carney, joined them on stage on guitar for a performance of the catchy “Electioneering.” “That was fun,” Zane said.
“Climbing Up the Walls” was a true highlight in their set, where Evan’s vocals were pure as the driven snow and their velvet harmonies were reminiscent of soulfulness of The Civil Wars.
“Are you guys having fun?” Zane reiterated as he pointed out that OK Computer is indeed a sad album.
Evan went to talk about the irony behind their next song in their set, which was appropriately titled “No Surprises.” “Thank you for coming to our dress rehearsal [for tomorrow’s show],” Zane jokingly laughed. Evan also stated that the eclipse season is weird.
After the hypnotic “Lucky,” which had an eerie vibe to it, they closed on a fitting note with the closing track “The Tourist.”
“This album is a lot of emotion to take on,” Zane acknowledged. “Thank you so much for coming to the show. We really appreciate it,” he told the fans.
Evan + Zane will be performing again at Chelsea Table & Stage tomorrow evening, on Monday, November 6.
The Verdict
Overall, Evan + Zane were able to take their New York listeners on a journey through the music and lyrics of Radiohead.
For the most part, they were able to do these classic tunes justice, and they were simultaneously able to dust them off and introduce them to a younger audience in a refreshing manner with their own unique Evan + Zane spin on them. Their live show at Chelsea Table & Stage garnered two thumbs up.
