Review: ‘Durarara!! x 2’ EP 7 shows that Varona is a power player

Episode seven of Durarara!! x 2, titled “Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for paid members. Free members can watch this same episode six days from now on February 28th.

I am finally glad to see an episode that actually focuses on Simon and Russia Sushi.

I happened to find Simon interesting because he is literally a Black Russian meaning he is a Russian national of African descent. He is interesting because his strength rivals Shizuo’s and is not threatened by Izaya.

The fact that Simon is part of the Dollars make it interesting, too.

I find the idea of a Russian operated sushi bar in Japan to be a unique concept, which I think is handy in bringing Russian customers over.

Simon’s monologue about the name “Ivan” is interesting because one group of them work as contract assassins or the other group consists of psychopaths.

The scene in Russia was interesting to watch because it triggered Varona and Sloan’s exile to Japan as professional assassins. It was unnerving to hear that Varona’s own father, Drakon, is willing to execute her for breaking one of the most sacred laws.

You can call her father a “monster,” but you have to respect the man’s objectivity.

I was surprised that Colonel Lingerin expressed shock and horror at the Drakon’s idea to condemn his own daughter to death. But he wasn’t that shocked because of his confidence that they are unable to do anything to Varona.

It was interesting to see this arc continue from the previous arc that involved the hunt for Celty and Ruri aka “Hollywood” since Egor got dragged into the fray.

Varona’s childhood was interesting to watch because Drakon ultimately grooms her to be an assassin, which allows them to connect. Drakon reminds me of one of those “dark professionals” that are distant from their children for many reasons such as “marriage to the job” or the need to keep them in the dark for their own safety.

Normal people can call this a f—ked moment to see father and daughter connecting when the latter kills for the first time.

Varona started to remind me of Kobra from Mortal Kombat: Deception when she used her training to take out common thugs and other criminals. It ultimately makes me feel that Varona is more terrifying than Celty and Hollywood combined.

This Russian beauty is a mere human and has no qualms with killing targets even if they are supernatural beings like Celty.

Varona picks the wrong girl, Anri, to f—k with.

I did not expect a confrontation between Varona and Anri, but I found it interesting. I honestly thought there would be a rematch between Varona and Celty.

Celty’s sudden appearance counts as justification for Varona to use one of the anti-material rifles that she smuggled out of Russia. I did not expect Varona to respond to Celty by bringing out the big guns. It is obvious that Varona shows fear, but refuses to back down from it.

I ultimately wonder why Varona was hired to target Anri.

This episode was ultimately interesting to watch because I got to see Varona’s back-story and how she is throwing herself into the chaotic mix.
