Review: Duane Betts’ ‘Sketches of American Music’ is a musical gem (Includes first-hand account)

Duane co-wrote five out of the six tracks on the EP, and his father penned “California Blues.” His album opens with the refreshing and mid-tempo “Taking Time,” where his rumbling vocals instantly lure the listener into this studio effort. He shows some swagger on “Downtown Runaround,” and it is followed by the atmospheric ballad “When We Get Home.”

The singer-songwriter does Dickey Betts’ “California Blues” justice with his distinct yet endearing version. “Think I’m Doing Well” is more bluesy and soulful, with a haunting vibe to it, and the album closes on an appropriate note with “Ride It Out.”

Sketches of American Music is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, Duane Betts delivers on his breakthrough studio offering Sketches of American Music. This is a collection that deserves to be played on vinyl, so that the listener can truly enjoy the sequencing, authenticity and storytelling of the album. This EP displays Duane’s wide range as a recording artist, singer and songwriter. Each song on here has its own identity, and the soaring melodies stand out by a mile. Grab a bottle of wine, and let Duane lure you in. This musical project garners an A rating.
