Review: Donica Knight delivers on ‘Can’t Buy a Southern Girl’ EP (Includes first-hand account)

Her EP opens with the upbeat and rocking “Love Ain’t a Prize,” which features the title track lyric “can’t buy a southern girl’s heart.” Her vocals on the opening track are reminiscent of country star Leann Rimes. It is followed by the equally spitfire tune, the unapologetic “Acting Like a Lady.” She shows her fans how to have a good time on “Party in My Dream.” She changes the pace of her collection with the mid-tempo “Blinded by Love.” It closes with the infectious “Stomp,” which has a stomping beat to it.

Knight’s music is a refreshing blend of southern rock, country, adult contemporary and blues. Throughout her career in the music industry, she has opened for such diverse artists as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Hank Williams Jr., Kid Rock, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Kenny Rogers, Scotty McCreery, neo-traditionalists Jamey Johnson and Joe Nichols, REO Speedwagon, The Band Perry, Chris Young, and 3 Doors Down, among many others. Most impressive about Knight is that she has written and recorded duets with Country Music Hall of Famer Ronnie Milsap. She has also worked with acclaimed country producer Mickey Jack Cones.

The Verdict

Overall, Donica Knight’s new EP deserves more than just a passing glance. It earns 4 out of 5 stars, and she displays a great deal of talent.
