Review: Dolly Parton charming on new country album ‘Pure & Simple’ (Includes first-hand account)

Her album opens with the soothing title track song “Pure & Simple,” where Parton’s voice is as gentle as ever. Equally impressive is the gorgeous love ballad “Say Forever You’ll Be Mine,” which features stunning fiddle instrumentation. She picks up the pace with the mid-tempo “Never Not Love You.”

“Kiss It (And Make It All Better)” has such a positive message to it. “Can’t Be That Wrong” is yet another slow-moving traditional country ballad. “Outside Your Door” is more mid-tempo and sassy, while “Tomorrow Is Forever” is bittersweet and tender, with a haunting steel guitar solo. She shows her fans how to have fun on the cheery “I’m Sixteen.” It closes with the uplifting “Head Over High Heels” and the moving ballad “Forever Love,” which is sung as a neat lullaby.

The Verdict

Overall, Dolly Parton has released a wonderful new album with Pure & Simple, and it is country to the core. Her voice is as lilting and crystalline as ever. She proves to be timeless and relevant as ever. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
