Review: Def Leppard’s Phil Collen delights on ‘Delta Deep’ blues album (Includes first-hand account)

It begins with the up-tempo and rocking tune “Bang The Lid” and it followed by the sultry ballad “Whiskey.” Equally impressive is the soaring rocking number “Down In The Delta,” while “Treat Her Like Candy” is mellow and more laid-back.

Debbi Blackwell belts out “Miss Me” and “Burnt Sally” is an instrumental masterpiece. “Private Number” is a distinct collaboration with David Coverdale. “Shuffle Sweet” is upbeat with strong melodies and a great deal of fun. “Black Coffee” is a collaboration with Paul Cook and Simon Laffy. The album closes with “Feelit” and “Mistreated,” the latter of which features Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott on lead vocals, and they nail it.

The Verdict

Overall, Phil Collen’s latest side project “Delta Deep” is a huge success. It proves his versatility as a recording artist and all of the musicians on this studio effort (Debbi Blackwell on vocals, Forrest Robinson on percussion/drums, and Robert DeLeo on bass) are superb and extremely talented. It earns 4.5 out of 5 stars.
