British vocal impressionist Debbie Wileman released her amazing studio album “I’m Still Here” on June 10, 2022, which coincided with Judy Garland’s 100th Birthday.
It was conducted and produced by Grammy winner Steve Orich (the orchestrator of the Grammy-winning album “Jersey Boys”), and executive produced by Scott Stander.
This collection features many of Garland’s classics, as well as other contemporary tunes that she believes Garland would be singing today.
It opens with the title track “I’m Still Here,” which instantly lures listeners in this musical effort, and it is followed by a soaring rendition of “Beauty and the Beast” and she is able to take The Beatles’ classic “Yesterday” and make it her own while incorporating it as a medley with “Into My Life.”
Equally impressive and distinct is her version of Patsy Clin’s”Crazy.” It is followed by “Fifth Percent” and “Back to Black.” Another highlight includes “Optimistic Voices,” which includes a mash-up of “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked” done in true Judy Garland fashion.
After a haunting cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” it closes with Garland’s signature tune “Over the Rainbow,” which is sung with the conviction and charm that Garland invested in it, and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
The Verdict
Overall, “I’m Still Here” by Debbie Wileman is fabulous from start to finish. Wileman possesses the control, powerhouse tone, and diction of Judy Garland. She proves to be one true song stylist, and she does all of the Judy Garland songs justice. “I’m Still Here” garners an A rating. Well done.
