Review: Deadmau5 spectacular at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City (Includes first-hand account)

Deamau5 began his set in an ambient fashion, where the venue erupted upon his presence, and 15 minutes into his set he sported his signature mau5head. The giant televised screen was in 3-D and it featured visually striking backgrounds throughout the entire night.

It was great to hear him perform songs from his new album, the critically-acclaimed W:/2016ALBUM/, as well as his older classics such as “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff,” where everybody was singing along.

Most impressive about Deadmau5 is that he allowed the music to speak for itself. Equally remarkable was “Somewhere up here.” He took his audience and listeners on a journey through his music over the years. Some of the backgrounds on the screen were witty, which included video games, cows wearing mau5heads and even a Rukib’s cube with pictures of a mau5head on every square.

“Thank you guys so much for coming,” Joel Zimmerman said. “Can’t believe this shit works. A lot of swearing went into this,” he admitted, prior to dropping a few more expletives.

The Verdict

Overall, Deadmau5’s set at Hammerstein Ballroom was high-octane and eclectic, coupled with the aroma of pot. At times it was ambient, upbeat and it got more aggressive, with a neat balance of well-crafted tracks. He commanded the stage well thanks to his infectious beats and drops. It garnered an A rating.
