This event was hosted and facilitated by 95.5 PLJ air personality Ralphie Aversa. “How is everybody doing?” asked Raphie, prior to introducing American Idol winner and singer-songwriter David Cook to the 95.5 PLJ studio audience, for his inaugural Stage 17 performance.
In return, Cook praised Stage 17 for being an “awesome performance space location.” Cook kicked off his acoustic set with a exceptional version of “Come Back to Me,” where he was accompanied by Jeff Scott on acoustic guitar, and their soaring harmonies blended well together. His vocals were haunting yet powerful.
“Thank you very much,” Cook said, graciously. “How are we doing tonight New York? Thank you WPLJ for having us!” He paid homage to the late Chris Cornell, by singing his smash single “Light On,” which ironically enough, Cornell co-wrote with Brian Howes. This moving rendition displayed Cook’s impressive upper register and harking voice. “I’m honored to be the voice of a song that Chris wrote,” Cook admitted.
He closed by premiering his brand new single, “Gimme Heartbreak,” which marked the first time that he ever played it live in an acoustic fashion. His rich vocals on “Gimme Heartbreak” were controlled and beautiful.
The Verdict
