Review: Daughtry incredible at Jones Beach Theater in New York (Includes first-hand account)

The band is fronted by 37-year-old rocker Chris Daughtry, who is known from his tenure on American Idol, and his own charted solo singles, in his own right.

They opened their set with the mid-tempo and rocking “Go Down,” and it was followed by “Feels Like Tonight” and the soaring “Crawling Back To You,” the latter of which was this journalist’s personal favorite Daughtry tune.

Chris’ powerhouse vocal performance of the empowering “Waiting for Superman” had a neat echo effect to it. An added bonus was hearing them cover Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” in a haunting, piano-driven fashion.

Equally noteworthy were the optimistic “Life After You and the liberating “Over You.” It was great to hear them sing their new song “Backbone” in their New York set, which was followed by their Grammy-nominated breakthrough single “It’s Not Over.”

Daughtry closed their set with such smash hits as the adult contemporary classic “Home,” where blue lights dimmed from the stage, and the infectious “September,” where everybody was reciting the lyrics verbatim.

The Verdict

Despite the pouring rain, Daughtry put on top-notch rock show at Jones Beach. Chris Daughtry’s lead vocals were fierce and impressive, and he commanded the stage well, where his energy level was contagious. While Nickelback may have been the headliners, it is safe to say that Chris Daughtry and his band upstaged the Canadian group Nickelback. Daughtry’s live opening set garnered an A rating.
