Review: Chic and Nile Rodgers dazzle Madison Square Garden in New York (Includes first-hand account)

Chic shared the stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Earth, Wind and Fire. They kicked off their set with the infectious “Everybody Dance,” where they were able to get their listeners in a funky mood from the first note. R&B songstressKimberly Davis triumphed on lead vocals, and Nile Rodgers’ prowess on guitar was unparalleled.

They immediately broke into “Dance, Dance, Dance” and the catchy “I Want Your Love.” Chic had the audience singing and dancing along to “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down,” both of which became popular hits for Ms. Diana Ross. Equally fun were “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and the perennial party anthem “We Are Family.” They were able to dust off Daft Punk’s electronic smash hit “Get Lucky” and give it a more sultry and smooth feel, and they succeeded. The highlight song of the night was their signature tune “Le Freak,” coupled by “Let’s Dance,” which became a worldwide hit for the late David Bowie.

Most impressive about Nile Rodgers was that he did not play any cover songs. All of these tunes in their Madison Square Garden set were songs that he either composed himself or produced.

After the groovy and mid-tempo “Good Times,” they closed their set with “Rapper’s Delight,” where they were able to get their fans stimulated and involved in the show.

The Verdict

Overall, Chic and Nile Rodgers proved that funk and disco music is very music alive in the “Big Apple.” They are a vocal group that belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their nostalgic hits will stand the test of time, and they are a substantial indication that disco music will never go out of style. Chic’s live show at the “World’s Most Famous Arena” garnered an A rating. Well done.
