Review: Chaka Khan rocks St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York (Includes first-hand account)

Khan took her fans on a musical journey over the years, while singing some of her classic hits from her illustrious career. She opened with “Do You Love What You Feel” and it was followed by “Tell Me Something Good” and “I’m A Woman (I’m A Backbone).”

She covered several Rufus songs in her set such as “You Got the Love,” “Everlasting Love” and “Sweet Thing.” Other noteworthy tunes included “Papillon (a.k.a. Hot Butterfly),” “What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me” and “Love Me Still,” where blue lights dimmed from the stage.

Khan closed her set with an exceptional cover of “My Funny Valentine” and a powerhouse version of “I’m Every Woman,” where she got the crowd on their feet and dancing along. “Thank you. I love you,” she exclaimed, and blew kisses to the audience members.

The acclaimed songstress returned for an encore, where she belted out her signature song “Ain’t Nobody,” which earned her a lengthy standing ovation.

The Verdict

Overall, Chaka Khan only gets better with age and experience. She has been affectionately known as the “Queen of Funk,” and rightfully so. The audience was well aware that they were in the presence of an R&B, soul and disco music queen. It is evident that she belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Chaka Khan’s concert at St. George Theatre in Staten Island garnered an A rating.
