Review: Celine Dion magical on the Citi concert series on ‘Today’ (Includes first-hand account)

Dion brought her fans on a trip down memory lane to 1996 with her Grammy-nominated “Because You Loved Me,” where she displayed her tremendous lung power. “I want you to sing this last verse with me,” she told her Today show audience: “I’m everything I am because you loved me.”

She encouraged her fans to sing along with her on the medley of hits that followed, which began with the enlightening “A New Day Has Come.” It was followed by the equally beautiful and optimistic “That’s The Way It Is,” and she had the crowd clapping along with her on the liberating “I’m Alive.” “You are looking good New York, Oh yeah,” she said, praising her fans. Her a cappella ending of “We’re Alive” was incorporated as a crowd sing-along.

“It’s very appropriate. It’s a song everybody knows, and it’s a song that everybody should know, and a song that everybody should sing. We’re in New York, the sky is blue and the sky is the limit,” she said, and immediately broke into her rendition of Judy Garland’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” which she sang with melisma.

The Verdict

Overall, Celine Dion was able to put on a magical concert in the heart of New York City. She proved that vocally, she is still in top form. Her live show garnered an A rating.
