Veteran actresses Catherine Curtin (“Orange is the New Black”) and Marcia Cross (“Desperate Housewives”) portray pen pals in the Off-Broadway production of “Pen Pals,” which is being performed at DR2 Theatre in New York City.

“Pen Pals” was written by Michael Griffo and it was directed by SuzAnne Barabas. Every two weeks, there is a rotating cast of actresses for these roles so that no two shows are ever alike.

The play is a celebration of the endearing power of friendship, longevity, and connection through handwritten letters over the span of five decades.

Ever since 14 years old, Bernie and Mags shared every part of their lives together, which include their innermost secrets (first crushes, relationships, and the drama that came in their personal lives, and even medical scares).

In “Pen Pals,” Bernie (Catherine Curtin) and Mags (Marcia Cross) live in two different countries (United States and England respectively), they haven’t met in person, but they are best friends through their confidential and honest letters to one another.

The Verdict

Overall, Catherine Curtin and Marcia Cross were wonderful in this iteration of “Pen Pals.” They commanded the DR2 stage for the show’s entire 106 minute duration.

Catherine Curtin was a powerhouse and transformative as Bernie… she embodied the character like no other, nailed every syllable, accent, mannerism, and expression, and made the audience feel every emotion imaginable (heartache, laughter, joy, love, warmth, and contentment). Her acting was superb, convincing, and it truly ran the gamut.

Marcia Cross was refreshing and delightful as Mags, and she brought rawness, elegance, and authenticity to her complex character. Cross’ acting was equal in excellence to that of Roma Downey meets Julianne Moore, and that ought to be taken as a compliment.

This “Pen Pals” pairing was a match made in theatrical heaven; they were able to breathe fresh life into Michael Griffo’s script. The venue provided a warm, intimate setting for a show of this caliber.

Their run in “Pen Pals” will wrap up on November 9th, and it is highly recommended that one sees them perform live. They will not be disappointed.

Catherine Curtin and Marcia Cross garnered an A rating for a job well done.
