Review: Canadian musician Ed Roman back with new album ‘Red Omen’ (Includes first-hand account)

His musical style encompasses elements of pop, rock, folk, reggae and country music. He has performed at the Red Gorilla Music Fest during SXSW, the Millennium Music Conference, and SS Cape May, and he has played shows in both New York City and Philly. In addition, Roman is a Heart Songs for Veterans artist, where he donates money to help veterans with his single and Top 10 Yallwire video, “Lay One Down.”

All of the songs on the CD were penned by Roman. It was co-produced by Michael Jack and Ed Roman for Down Roscoe Productions. It was recorded, edited, mixed and mastered by Michael Jack. On this project, Roman sang lead and background vocals, and he played such instruments as electric and acoustic guitar, accordion, drums, percussion and even the Hammond organ.

It opens with the laid-back title track “Red Omen” and it is followed by the upbeat and witty “Tough Cookie.” Equally impressive is “I Wish The Wolfman Was Back,” where Roman gets into the character of the wolf-man. Its debut single “I Am Love” has a Phillip Phillips and Dave Matthews Band vibe to it. The piano-driven “The Way She Goes” is mellow and calming.

He picks up the pace with the country-flaired “You Think I’m Just A Fool.” “Time Itself” begins mid-tempo and laid-back, but it builds up into a uptempo tune. “ETA” is upbeat and fun, while “Lay One Down” is an acoustic ballad that displays his gentle vocals. The album closes with an extended mix of “I Am Love.”

The Verdict

Overall, Ed Roman’s new album is quite promising. The highlight songs on there include “Lay One Down,” his lead single “I Am Love,” “Lay One Down” and “The Way She Goes.” It earns 4 out of 5 stars.
