Review: Cam has best female country single of 2016 with ‘Mayday’ (Includes first-hand account)

Cam co-wrote the song with songwriter Tyler Johnson. It is a track from her breakthrough studio album, Untamed, which was released on Arista Nashville. It was co-produced by Johnson, as well as Jeff Bhasker and Zachary Werner.

It is the follow-up to her Grammy-nominated hit song “Burning House,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country charts.

“Mayday” is rich in symbolism, dealing with a failing relationship (especially a lengthy one that is past its expiration date), and it is an anthem of female empowerment. Cam tackles its subject matter with much delicacy and sentimentalism. Her vocals are mellifluous and refreshing, and she proved that she deserves to be the next big female star in the genre, especially at a time where only two female singers are played on the radio airwaves.

The Verdict

Overall, Cam sends chills down one’s spine with her latest single “Mayday.” It is a pity that it did not chart higher on the Billboard Hot Country charts, since it was a brilliant vocal performance by perhaps the most underrated female recording artist in country music. “Mayday” garners an A rating.
