Review: Brett Kissel superb on new studio album ‘Pick Me Up’ (Includes first-hand account)

It begins with the soaring title track “Pick Me Up” and it is followed by its infectious, chart-topping Canadian country single “Airwaves,” which lures the listener in from its first note. “Cool With That” is a laid-back and nonchalant vocal, where he makes an allusion to George Strait in its lyrics.

“Feet Back on the Ground” is yet another positive and empowering track that Kissel nails. “I Can Play Guitar” is a stellar collaboration with country star Hunter Hayes, and both artists shows their fans how to have a fun time (The listener can recall Brad Paisley and Keith Urban’s “Start a Band”).

“She’s Desire” consists of top-notch musical production, while he pours his heart out on the tender ballad “Why Won’t You,” which features raw, conversational lyrics. “I Hope It’s Me” is an upbeat and feel-good tune. “That’s Why God Made Guitars” is yet another song that is extremely radio-friendly.

It closes on a poignant note, with “I Didn’t Fall In Love With Your Hair,” which is a bittersweet duet with award-winning country songstress Carolyn Dawn Johnson, where Kissel just breaks your heart and is able to connect with his fans on an emotional level. The listener ought to have the box of Kleenex ready for this one.

The Verdict

Overall, Brett Kissel has done a fabulous job on his latest studio album. It showcases his versatility as a country recording artist, and he just shines on every song. Mickey Jack Cones does an amazing job on its production. Pick Me Up garners an A rating.
