Grammy and Tony winner Brenda Russell released her latest single “You Know What It’s Like,” where she pays homage to Roberta Flack.

This song was co-written by Russell, Barry Miles, and the late but great Roberta Flack (it is featured as a track on Flack’s 1988 album “Oasis”).

Russell allows her rich, crisp voice to shine on this song, which is sultry and sensual, and it encompasses elements of R&B/soul, adult contemporary, and jazz music.

In addition, the song has a modern dreamy Brazilian and Latin vibe, which is infectious. Her controlled, harking vocals are pure as the driven snow. Brenda Russell proves to be one true song stylist.

The lyrics are warm, honest and resonant, coupled with a catchy melody, and Russell will take her fans and listeners on an emotional journey of self-discovery through music.

In a press statement, Russell expressed, “The song is a reflection of my musicality meeting the incredible musicality of Roberta, who is one of the all-time queens of popular music.”

Russell remarked, “I’m so excited and grateful to pay homage to my dear friend and co-writer Roberta with ‘You Know What It’s Like’, and so grateful for the all the fantastic and creative people who helped me make this record.”

“At this time in history, music’s most important job is to inspire us to be better people. I put a lot of love into my music and appreciate the opportunity to lift their spirits through the power of song,” Russell added.

The Verdict

Overall, Brenda Russell charms on her latest single “You Know What It’s Like.”

It is safe to say that Russell does Flack justice and she makes her proud with her delivery and execution.

This version is both refreshing and healing, and it deserves more than just a passing glance. Grab a bottle of wine (if you are over the age of 21), and let Brenda Russell lure you in.
