Sports comedies are nothing new. A good sports comedy, however, isn’t always easy to find. Director Bryan Buckley hopes to get high marks with The Bronze, a new comedy starring and written by Melissa Rauch along side husband and co-writer Winston Rauch.
The film tells the story of bratty former Olympic gymnast Hope Annabelle Greggory (Melissa Rauch), who’s been riding the fame of her bronze medal win for years. But with her diva antics taking its toll on the citizens of her hometown, Hope desperately hangs on to what little pseudo-celebrity she has left. Enter naive Maggie Townsend (Haley Lu Richardson), a strong prospect for the Olympic Gymnastic Team, who desperately wants Hope to be her trainer. Cut off financially by her fed up dad (Gary Cole), Hope reluctantly takes the job.
Produced by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass, this film could have all the earmarks of a winner. Raunchy, funny and original, The Bronze has an excellent pedigree in the comedy department. Known for their knack for finding dramatic and funny crossover material to produce, the Duplass Brothers seem on point with this one. Supported by a comedy pros in Gary Cole, Cecily Strong and Thomas Middleditch the movie should be big on laughs.
Seeing Melissa Rauch really let loose is a treat. Rude, raw and hilarious from what is screened in the trailer, she is going for it in a big way. Hopefully, the best parts were left unseen thus far. Not for kids, this raunchy flick is a definite recommend. But be your own critic and check out the trailer for The Bronze. It might just be a 10! Enjoy.
