Review: Barry Michael soars on new country album ‘On My Island’ (Includes first-hand account)

The CD opens with the up-tempo love song “Story ‘Bout a Lady” and it is followed by the laid-back title track tune “On My Island,” which has a nonchalant Kenny Chesney vibe to it.

“Lake Sinclair” is one of the most fun songs on the collection, where the listener can recall country star Jake Owen. He changes the pace with the ballad “You Got Me,” while “Help Me Understand” is more heartfelt on an emotional level due to its inspirational and gospel nature.

He shows his audience how to have a good time on the witty “Get Me Some” and he is not afraid to show his vulnerability on “Fallin Outta Love,” which is a tune that many listeners, especially those in a failing romance, can relate to. The cheery “Charlie Brown” is filled with optimism, and it features neat fiddle instrumentation.

“I’m Gonna Love You” is another gritty love song, and it closes with the drum-driven “It’s Alright If You Stay” and the upbeat traditional-sounding tune “Sittin On The Porch.”

The Verdict

Overall, Barry Michael delivers on his On My Island album. There is a lot of variety on this project. He is one of the most underrated male vocalists in the country genre of music. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
