Review: Ashley Monroe mellifluous on new country album ‘The Blade’ (Includes first-hand account)

She co-wrote 12 out of its 13 tracks, and it was co-produced by Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill and Justin Niebank. Her albums begins with her uplifting radio single “On To Something Good.” It is followed by the melancholic “I Buried Your Love Alive,” which has a dark mood to it. “Bombshell” is another polished ballad, featuring Monroe’s gorgeous vocals.

“Weight Of The Load” is more mid-tempo with vivid imagery to it. “The Blade” is a haunting yet well-crafted ballad, while the fiddle-driven “Dixie” is another neat story song. It closes with such gentle vocals as “Mayflowers” and “I’m Good At Leavin.'”

The Verdict

Overall, Ashley Monroe is phenomenal on her latest studio effort, The Blade. Her crystalline voice is a wonder in itself, and it was eloquently produced. The Blade is easily the best female country album of 2015, by the most underrated female artist in the genre. It garners 5 out of 5 stars.
