Review: Andra Day delivers on ‘Cheers to the Fall’ album (Includes first-hand account)

It opens with the smooth and sultry “Forever Mine,” and it is followed by the uplifting “Only Love,” where she showcases her powerhouse pipes. “Gold” is a sassy vocal performance, while “Not Today” is yet another dynamic ballad on this project, where she displays her tremendous range.

“Mistakes” contains neat backing vocals, and it is the quintessential sing-along tune. “Goodbye Goodnight” is captivating from a lyrical standpoint. “Rearview” is a highlight song due to the distinct analogies that it uses in its lyrics.

“Red Flags” is an atmospheric vocal performance that is worthy of the repeat button. She picks up the pace with the catchy “Honey Or Fire,” and equally impressive is the jazzy ballad “Gin & Juice (Let Go My Hand).”

Rise Up” is the lead single that introduced Day’s music to the world, and her vulnerability on this song is the audience’s reward. It closes with “City Burns,” which features harmonica-playing, as well as the title track tune “Cheers To The Fall.”

The Verdict

Overall, Andra Day delights on her debut studio album Cheers to the Fall. It is proof that her two Grammy nominations were indeed based on sheer merit and natural talent. It is recommended for fans of Duffy, Adele and the late Amy Winehouse, as it has that retro vibe to it. All of the songs on this collection have the potential to become radio singles at some point in the future. There is a lot of versatility of this musical effort. This album by Andra Day earns 4.5 out of 5 stars.
