Oscar-nominated actress and singer Amy Irving (“Yentl”) pays tribute to Willie Nelson with her new country album “Always Will Be.”

This refreshing studio offering has a retro vibe, which blends the worlds of music and theater in order to craft a very personal autobiography in song as Irving reflects on key moments from her respected career in the entertainment industry.

Willie Nelson wrote eight out of the ten songs on this record, and the other two were songs he recorded, and suggested that Irving uses them as well for this musical project.

The album opens with the stirring “It’s a Dream Come True,” where she collaborates with Lizzie No, which instantly lures fans and listeners in this collection.

It immediately breaks into “Yesterday’s Wine,” where she sings with Goolis, and she picks up the pace with the upbeat “I Guess I’ve Come to Live Here In Your Eyes,” which features Chris Pierce.

Equally distinct are “I’d Have To Be Crazy,” and she brings out her inner punk-rock star in the uptempo “If You Want Me to Love You I Will.” She showcases some sass and attitude on “Gettin’ Over You.”

Steve Earle joins her on the somber piano-laden ballad “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So.” “Everywhere I Go,” featuring Louis Cato, has a Latin flair to it

After the pristine title cut “Always Will Be,” her collaboration with Amy Helm, it closes with “Angels Flying Too Close To The Ground,” where she duets with Country Music Hall of Famer Willie Nelson himself, as she leaves her fans and listeners wanting to hear more.

The Verdict

Overall, Amy Irving delights with her new album “Always Will Be,” which is warm, heartfelt, nostalgic, and resonant. Each song on here has its own identity, and she proves to be one true song stylist. Simply put, Irving is the Sammi Smith equivalent of our generation.

Irving is able to put her audience into a time warp and take them back to simpler times in the ’70s and early ’80s when the music was rich and pure. Her “Always Will Be” album is Grammy-worthy, and it garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
