Review: ‘Aldnoah.Zero 2’ EP 9 reveals Slaine Troyard’s major ambition

Episode nine of Aldnoah.Zero 2, titled “The Fortune’s Fool,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Daisuki for premium subscribers. Free subscribers can watch the same episode six days from now on March 14th.

This episode is closely connected to the previous episode when Count Mazuurek catches Princess Lemrina, disguised as Princess Asseylum, in a lie, realizing that Inaho Kaizuka was right all alone.

Things are bound to heat up as Lemrina learns that Asseylum has recovered and that Asseylum finally remembers Inaho. Slaine is ultimately caught in the middle because of his plotting and scheming. I wouldn’t be surprised if Slaine’s ambition is torn apart by Inaho’s indirect interference.

Slaine’s profound words to Harklight struck a chord with me as his true ambition might be to put an end to the titular Aldnoah. He does side with Vers, but feels that war was started because the humans on Vers could because they have the power of Aldnoah. It reminds me of Cross Ange and The Rolling Girls because power has a consequence.

The latest episode of The Rolling Girls pointed out that the moonlight stones may have a detrimental effect on the users. It would mean that the Bests would suffer unforeseen consequences if they continued using the moonlight stones.

The latest episode of Cross Ange revealed that mana users could be controlled by Embryo. It meant that anybody that can use mana is ultimately a slave to Embryo’s whims.

I was shocked that Slaine’s ultimate goal is to use Aldnoah’s power for something bigger.

He has a valid point because the Vers Royal Family have a genetic link to activating Aldnoah along with some technicalities. The Royals can bestow the same power to the Orbital Knights. It obviously leads to the conclusion that Aldnoah’s power has caused plenty of damage to Vers’ society.

Aldnoah becomes crucial to Slaine’s plan, but Inaho can put a wrench in it at any given time.

There is the revelation that Princess Lemrina now knows that Slaine lied to her about Asseylum’s condition. Mazuurek has also become Inaho’s sleeper agent, too, giving him a very crucial role. Slaine’s ambitions have become a house of cards because Lemrina could easily tear it down in a heartbeat politically and Inaho could neutralize his expansion plans on the ground.

My money is on Inaho to foil Slaine’s plans because he adapts his strategy to handle multiple enemies like Orga, Sebring, and Raffia. The three of them gave Inaho a run for his money when they worked together.

That is the least of her worries when Lemrina surprises Asseylum. I know Lemrina was going to try something extreme. This reminded me of the scene when Lacus Clyne and Meer Campbell, Lacus’ body double, met each other because it was the exact confrontation.

I was wowed at the main battle in this episode as the three Orbital Knights faced the consequences for crossing Inaho. It was interesting that Inaho quickly adapted to fighting multiple unique enemies at once.

Watching Inaho uses Sebring’s own electrical power against himself was a treat.

I had a “holy s—t” look on my face when Slaine was talking to Lemrina only to see that she and Asseylum switched with each other.

For a moment, I thought Lemrina would either shoot or imprison Asseylum. Watching Asseylum aim a gun at Slaine shocked me greatly and I am loving this twist of events.

That ends up being the least of Slaine’s worries when Inaho comes up with a crazy strategy to deal Orga and his self-cloning ability.

It was ultimately an enlightening episode of Aldnoah.Zero 2.

Slaine makes me think of Frank Underwood from House of Cards because they are willing to discard everything in order to achieve their ambitions. Inaho manages to score an important victory, but it ultimately takes a toll on his mind.
