Lambert was able to provide contestants with excellent feedback, since he is the sole Idol alum to serve on both sides of the bench (judge’s table and know what it’s like to be a contestant himself). He also served as mentor for contestants several times throughout the different seasons, proving that he has plenty of experience to help out new talent.
He was joined by Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. on the judge’s table, and they dubbed that working with Lambert was “a fun and great experience.”
Connick Jr. shared that he missed the opportunity to see Lambert audition for Idol, so Lambert was able to fulfill that request for him. He re-enacted his audition from season 8, where he had auditioned for the show with Queen’s signature tune “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was written by the late Freddie Mercury. While Connick Jr. admitted that he had “big shoes to fill,” Lambert gave it his all.
Lambert began the classic Queen tune a-cappella and took his time. He nailed the high notes and his delivery was tender and delicate, paying homage to the original recording. Lambert had great control over his voice and its tone.
Both judges, Lopez and Connick Jr., were in awe of his performance and gave him a standing ovation, despite the fact that Lambert admitted to being “nervous.”
Coincidentally, Lambert is currently touring with classic rock band Queen, and he has sung their songs every night while on tour, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” so his musical journey thanks to American Idol has been quite the experience.
Congratulations to Lambert on all of the many successes he has had over the years.
