Review: ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ — Trailer

Known for his knack for creating big-screen spectacles with covert productions, J.J. Abrams has audiences guessing once more. Nearly a decade after he produced the highly successful Cloverfield, a film made famous for its mysterious and brilliant ad campaign, Abrams is at it again. Keeping with the “cloak and dagger” approach to making movies, his production company, Bad Robot Productions, has released a trailer for a film with almost no resemblance to its predecessor other than title.

10 Cloverfield Lane tells the story of a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up in a bunker after a car accident. Father and son doomsday preppers (John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.) tell her of a chemical attack which has forced them to stay underground.

Sequel or not, the movie looks interesting. Building the tension with meticulous editing and music choice, the trailer gives little indication of what actually goes on in the plot, leaving the viewer clamoring for more. Reminiscent in respect to how Cloverfield left audiences drooling for even a glimpse at what the monster looked like back when the trailers graced cineplexes those many years prior, J.J. Abrams was quoted by Hitflix as saying, ”The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Now, that statement does not necessarily mean that this is, in fact, a Cloverfield follow-up. Although, an update to the original Hitflix article has test audiences claiming the film is not a direct sequel. At this point, who knows? Abrams has pulled the wool over our eyes before. All part of the fun of a Bad Robot Production.

Directed by relative first-timer Dan Trachtenberg, I only know as much about 10 Cloverfield Lane as the trailer and J.J. Abrams want to divulge. But I do know one thing, I’m excited about this one and you just might be too. Be your own critic and check out the trailer below. It will all make sense soon enough.
