Pop recording artist LU KALA spoke about her music and songwriting inspirations, dream duet choices, and being a part of the digital age.
She just released her new pop album “No Tears On This Ride.”
What inspires your music and songwriting?
Life, my journey, the weather, how I’m feeling and so much more. I take inspiration from so much but every song I’ve ever put out or written is usually a direct reflection of how I’m feeling.
What are some of your favorite mottos to live by?
The world owes me nothing but I owe myself everything.
What do your plans for the future include?
Now that I got my first taste at touring I’m just excited to keep touring, to work on my debut album and to see who I will be even six months down the line.
Lately, I’ve been so locked in on myself mentally, physically and so forth so I’m excited to see who the woman I am morphing into.
How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age?
Weird. There are things I love and hate about it. In a perfect world I could fxck off and live on an island for six months and solely focus on making the best music I can but nowadays the artist is kinda all hands on. I have to make the music, be present online, promote myself heavily.
It makes me feel like a marketing team or robot at times and some days it feels like numbers are the only thing that matters which suck.
I am also grateful that in these current times I get to do what I love for a living and get to connect directly with my fans and supporters world wide.
When you really think about it, the big reason I have a career right now is because of the digital age and for that, I’m thankful!!
Which artists would you like to do a dream collab with someday?
There’s so many artists I’d like to collaborate with. I’m genuinely just a fan of music and so many artists. Today David Guetta was on my mind so I wrote an empowering song that could turn into a dance record.
If you see this David. Call me, but the list goes on; I love SZA. She bends into so many genres musically and her pen is insane, manifesting we do something together one day!
If Queen Rih ever comes back into music, I’ll camp outside her door to collaborate haha.
Doechii is a breath of fresh air and I think we’d make something dope together. Love me some Kim Petras, she’s so talented and I’d love to see what we’d make together.
I feel like Lewis Capaldi and I would make a beautiful ballad. the list goes on, I’m truly a fan of so many artists.
Were there any moments in your career that have helped define you?
Submitting my very first single before anyone had heard any of my original music to a competition and a Babyface songwriting camp and winning the competition as well as getting into the camp helped define me.
It made me realize people wanted to hear my story and no matter how many people closed the door on me, there were people out there that didn’t count me out and were even willing to place a bet on me.
Every door that closed on me helped define me and reminded me to keep believing in myself.
What does the word success mean to you?
To me success means results, means financial freedom, it means taking care of my family, it means being in good health, it means living out the dreams the little in me always believed I could.
To some, success is just waking up everyday and while that’s lovely I just want so much more for myself in all aspects of life.
What would you like to say to your fans?
I love you, I still can’t believe that y’all believe in me and ride for me the way you do. I am here because of you and I will never take that for granted. I hope when you listen to my music you always feel safe, seen and worthy.
It’s LUniverse till the death of me, I love you and I can’t wait to give y’all so much more love.
