Veteran actress and filmmaker Phylicia Rashad spoke about directing the play “Immediate Family.” This marks her third time directing this show.

“Immediate Family” was written by Hamilton’s Paul Oakley Stovall and it was directed by Tony award–winning actress, director, and TV star Phylicia Rashad (“The Cosby Show”). A six-time Emmy nominee, Rashad was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame back in 2016.

The synopsis is: The Bryant family reunion takes a comedic turn when the middle son brings home his Swedish boyfriend and tosses him into a stew of family dysfunctions.

Race, sexuality and religion are on the menu as a modern family meets Who’s Coming to Dinner in this relevant American play.

Rashad on ‘Immediate Family’

On her show “Immediately Family,” Rashad said, “Families can be so close. People can be so close and yet we miss each other.”

Lessons learned from this play

On the lessons learned from this production, Rashad said, “It taught me that no matter what I thought I knew is that there is always more to learn. I am learning this lesson all the time.

“There is always room to grow,” she noted. “I keep asking myself this all the time: how much more creative can I be? How much more insightful can I be? How much more honest can I be?”

Success

On her definition of the word success, Rashad said, “Success doesn’t mean what a lot of people may think it means… at least not to me. Success is living respectfully.”
