But, it looks like a battle between “Birdman” and “Boyhood” right now. That means if they cancel each other out, an upset may be in the making. That would benefit “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
Along the way, some notable additions and omissions. Jennifer Aniston is not in the Best Actress category and Clint Eastwood is left out of Best Director. Eastwood did get a Directors Guild Award nomination, so leaving him out is noteworthy.
Also, Ava DuVernay did not get a director nod for “Selma,” but the film did get a Best Picture nomination. The documentary “Life Itself” was left out, which is somewhat of a surprise since Roger Ebert was highly-respected in the industry.
But, perhaps the biggest surprise is “The LEGO Movie” being left out of Best Animated Film. That film was one of the biggest hits of 2014.
Amy Adams, who just won a Golden Globe, did not get in. But again, the Oscar nominations were already in before the winners of the Globes were presented. Plus, the Globes have a musical/comedy and a drama category, thus, more nominees.
Even though the Oscars can have up to 10 nominations in Best Picture, they have eight in that category. All categories were announced by the Academy, which was a first. “Each of the three years we’ve produced the show, we have attempted to refresh elements of the process and the telecast,” said Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, explained in a release. “This year, we’re honored to start a new tradition that celebrates the contributions of all the nominees by announcing all 24 categories. We’re thrilled that a distinguished actor and two world-class film directors are part of the initial launch.”
They were referring to Alfonso Cauron, JJ Abrams and Chris Pine.
