A native of New Jersey, Streep was the recipient of the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to her by fellow actress Viola Davis.
She praised many of the diverse acting performances this year, and she noted one in particular that struck a chord in her heart, where a “person of power” imitated a disabled reporter. Streep shared that this performance was not in film, but in real life. The acclaimed actress was referring to New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, and this incident happened at a Trump rally in November of 2015.
Streep concluded her eloquent speech for her lifetime achievement award with a quote from her late friend, Carrie Fisher (“Princess Leia”). “Take your broken heart, make it into art,” she said, which was followed by a standing ovation from her peers, as she underscored the importance of empathy.
Aside from winning this award, Streep was also nominated for the Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy” for Florence Foster Jenkins, where she played the title role, opposite British actor Hugh Grant.
