Op-Ed: Mark Ruffalo should win Best Supporting Actor for ‘Foxcatcher’

This marks Ruffalo’s second Academy Award nomination in his career. He was previously nominated for his role in The Kids Are All Right for “Best Supporting Actor,” however, it is safe to say that Foxcatcher is his best cinematic performance to date. He plays an Olympic wrestling legend, Dave Schultz, and he transforms into the athlete. He has great acting chemistry with his fellow actors in the film, which include Channing Tatum as Olympian Mark Schultz and Steve Carell as the millionaire murderer, John du Pont. Ruffalo steals every scene he is in Foxcatcher and that should not go unnoticed. He really pours his heart into this role and it is evident to anybody who was afforded the privilege to see the psychological thriller.

An Oscar win for Ruffalo would also pay tribute to his lengthy body of acting work. He has starred in over 40 films, and this year he was equally noteworthy and exceptional in The Normal Heart. It would also be the ideal homage to the film Foxcatcher, its acting, screenplay and direction.

For all of these reasons and more, Mark Ruffalo should be awarded “Best Supporting Actor” at this year’s Academy Awards. The film garnered rave reviews from Digital Journal.
