Op-Ed: Gordon Lightfoot should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

A native of Ontario, Canada, Lightfoot is a living legend in the global music scene. He is a trailblazer and visionary that has been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1987. He is regarded as a singer’s singer.

Lightfoot was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012, and rightfully so. His songs have been recording by some of the biggest artists of our time including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, and Judy Collins, among countless others.

His peers are huge fans of his musical work, especially Robbie Robertson of the Band, and Bob Dylan, who once proclaimed him as one of his favorite songwriters; moreover, Dylan said that he wished a Gordon Lightfoot song would last forever.

Lightfoot has served as a musical inspiration for many artists. His music encompassed elements of folk, rock, Americana, country, pop and adult contemporary. He is known for his rich, baritone voice and his 12-string acoustic guitar.

His catalog of classic hit singles includes “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway,” “Rainy Day People,” and his signature song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

The Canadian crooner, at 80 years old, continues to tour to this day. This past May, this journalist reviewed his show at the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, New York.

With Cat Stevens and Joan Baez already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that should make the transition easier for folks artists such as Gordon Lightfoot.
