Op-Ed: Claire Danes loses 2015 Emmy award to Viola Davis

On September 20, Danes lost the Emmy award for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series” yet again to Viola Davis, who won for her superb portrayal of Professor Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder for the episode “Freakin’ Whack-a-Mole,” which was televised on the ABC Network.

Danes was up for the episode “From A to B and Back Again” for playing Carrie Mathison on Homeland, which is televised on Showtime.

With this coveted Emmy award win, Davis made cinematic history, thus becoming the first African American actress, as well as the first black woman of any nationality, to take home this prestigious “Best Actress” award in a dramatic series.

Throughout her respected career in the acting industry, Davis has won two Tony awards, one for “Best Featured Actress In a Play,” and one for “Best Actress In a Play,” the latter of which was for her stage work in Fences. She has been nominated for the Academy Award for “Best Actress” for The Help and the Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actress” for her role in Doubt, where she co-starred with Amy Adams and multi-Academy Award winner Meryl Streep and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
