Op-Ed: Claire Danes loses Screen Actors Guild award to Viola Davis

Yesterday, at this year’s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, Claire Danes was in the running in two acting categories: “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series,” for her portrayal of Carrie Mathison in Homeland, as well as for the cast of Homeland for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.”

In the “Best Actress” category, Danes lost to Viola Davis who played Annalise Keating in How To Get Away With Murder. Davis’ acceptance speech for her SAG award was eloquent and poignant. In the “Best Actor” category at the SAG awards, Kevin Spacey reigned supreme for his role in the House of Cards.

Homeland failed to sweep the top honor in the “Ensemble in a Drama Series” category as well. It rightfully went to Downton Abbey. Let’s face it. Dame Maggie Smith is able to nail any acting role and subsequently turn it into gold. It is only appropriate for the series that she is in to prosper thanks to her work, and the rest of the stellar Downton Abbey cast.

In the film categories, Patricia Arquette was honored as “Best Supporting Actress” for Boyhood, J.K. Simmons took home “Best Supporting Actor” for Whiplash. Eddie Redmayne won “Best Actor” for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. It is great to see Julianne Moore finally receive recognition for her acting work and win for Still Alice. Hopefully, this is a harbinger that Moore will win the “Best Actress” Oscar, for which she is most overdue.
