Op-Ed: Barbary Coast days come alive in ‘Soiled Dove’ 2-day event (Includes interview)

Set amidst a thematic backdrop inspired by San Francisco’s notorious Barbary Coast era, guests can expect an engaging evening filled with danger, decadence, world-renowned performance and an innovative culinary spread worthy of royalty presented by San Francisco based Work of Art catering and culinary delights.

“’The Soiled Dove’ ironically is a reflection of itself, celebrating a bygone historical opus just as current San Francisco and its surrounding Bay Area modernizes itself away from its artistic personality and roots in rapid fashion.” said Vau de Vire Society founder and spokesman Mike Gaines. “Thus the show is an ode to the bombastic legend of the city’s Barbary Coast and California’s pioneer spirit.”

“The Soiled Dove” is a high-production, theatrically presented gourmet culinary extravaganza and in previous years has met with rave reviews. Gina White of AXS.com says, “Mike Gaines of Vau De Vire Society… has definitely outdone himself on this one! Vau de Vire Society’s circus-based productions are always creative and amazing. However, this show has taken it to the next level… It is the sexy, talented, great food version of that era.” And, Jean Martin of Examiner.com calls it “a dazzling and colorful affair.”
Similar to the Edwardian Ball, but not exactly the same, “The Soiled Dove” seeks to provide visitors with a truly unique and original experience. And, as Gaines believes, the ability for audiences to participate, by dressing up, joining in, is what provides a gratifying experience for attendees.
Described by some as a mixture of circus, cabaret and dinner theater, “The Soiled Dove,” offers just the right amount of old and rustic along with plenty of space for aerial acts and the many alcoves and stages for dancers, bands and shows, provide a constant stimulating atmosphere sure to please any visitor to the event. The bar/saloon is just as it would have been back in the Barbary Coast…and with all the “soiled doves” (what they called the prostitutes back in the day) prancing around, flirting and acting drunk and available…one feels like they’ve entered a brothel during the Gold Rush era.

Live musical accompaniment and arrangements will be provided by the famed Jazz Mafia / Realistic Orchestra with surprise guest cameos each evening. Drink tantalizing libations crafted by San Francisco’s own Monarch Bar. Shop at The Tortona Township Mercantile, where you will find unique wares and goods sold by local artisans.
Guests to the event will indulge in a world of decadence perfectly suited for those in search of an adventurous escapade into San Francisco’s scandalous history. Guests are encouraged to submerge themselves in the revelry by putting a little (or a lot) of effort into their attire…styles that cover Victorian, Edwardian, 49er, Harlots, Crimps or their most stylish period couture. Gaines and his crew of performers, acrobats, singers, dances and everything extraordinary are eager to tantalize and delight an audience.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. this Friday July 15 and will continue until Saturday July 16 ending minutes before Midnight. So far according to Facebook, over 5,000 people have been invited. Over 800 people have responded thus far. The Taxiway at Point Alameda, is located at 2153 Ferry Point, Alameda, CA. Alameda is located less than three miles east of San Francisco, overlooking the San Francisco Bay. This venue lends itself to the event’s “Barbary Coast” style theme, and its reminiscent 19th Century ambiance. For VIP tickets this includes a 4-course dinner, and a 9:30 PM for General Admission for the full show.

Tickets are available thru EventBright. Visit the Soiled Dove page on Facebook and visit the official Soiled Dove web site for details.
