On Your Feet! was directed by Jerry Mitchell and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. It features an all-star cast of actors such as Ana Villafañe as Gloria Estefan and Josh Segarra as her husband Emilio Estefan, and they truly bring both individuals to life. They deserve 2016 Tony nominations for their dynamic performances, since one cannot take their eyes off of them.
The musical begins with Gloria Estefan (Villafañe) suffering from her spinal injury after that tour bus accident in the early ’90s, yet she was able to make a triumphant return. The production goes back to her childhood where she met Emilio in her late teens, who would become her manager and producer. While she was initially shy of the spotlight, they manage to achieve commercial success thanks to the “Conga,” which became a smash hit in 1985. This song really resonated well with the audience, since they were in the aisles, dancing along and singing at the top of their lungs.
The second act features the signature song “Get On Your Feet,” and we are introduced to Gloria’s mother, and with the support of letters from fans and the couple’s perspicacity, the Latin songstress is able to make comeback for the American Music Awards in 1991.
