Olivia Sui talks about starring in the new film “Off the Record” film, where she stars opposite Rainey Qualley.

The music drama movie is available on Demand and on Digital as of May 2, 2025.

Rainey Qualley, who is best friends with Olivia Sui in real life, stars as Astor Grey, a rising singer-songwriter whose life takes a dark turn when she enters a turbulent romance with washed-up rock star Brandyn Verge (Ryan Hansen).

What begins as a whirlwind love story unravels into a gripping tale of manipulation and resilience as Astor fights to reclaim her autonomy and music.

It features cameos by Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Peyton Manning, and Edgerrin James – the film offers an exploration of the high stakes in the music industry.

Playing Noelle

On playing Noelle in the film, Sui said, “I love that Noelle is so close to who I am, and someone who is very loving. Noelle can defend herself and her best friend in tough situations.”

The digital age

On being a part of the digital age, Sui said, “I think that so many people get discovered on social media platforms by sharing what they are doing.”

“When you use social media for good and positive things, it is really great. I appreciate that feature in the movie,” she added.

Lessons learned from this screenplay

On the lessons learned from this script, Sui shared, “Again, I think Noelle is very close to who I am, as a friend, and someone who loves unconditionally no matter how many times Astor has bailed on her.”

“Noelle is just always there for her, and she is a good friend, and I like that about her,” she added.

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Sui said, “Creativity.”

Superpower of choice

If she were to have any superpower, it would be “Super speed.”

“I am always running late so I would love to have super speed; that would be great,” she said. “I would like to burn calories that way,” she said with a sweet laugh.

Best thing about being her age

On the best thing about being her age, she shared, “I am grateful for my body and where I am at. It feels like I can do anything I want, and it feels really good. I am very grateful for that.”

Favorite motto to live by

Regarding her favorite motto to live by, she revealed, “Live, laugh, love.”

Regarding her definition of success, she said, “To have the freedom to do creatively what you want, and you get to choose the people that you want to do it with.”

For fans and viewers, Sui remarked on the film, “We hope people enjoy the movie, and we hope they are entertained. We hope they leave with a sense of empowerment.”
