Actress Olivia Applegate chatted about starring in the new series “The Black Dagger Brotherhood,” which premiered on June 5th on Passionflix. She stars opposite Robert Maaser.

Playing Beth in the series

Applegate is drawn to playing Beth for several reasons. “I loved a lot of things about Beth,” she said. “I really related to her as a person. I felt like I really understood her and I felt close to her in life already. I loved that she is a journey, and she goes for it. She is sassy too.”

“I really enjoyed Beth, and it felt like an honor to get to play her, and represent all of the really intense things she goes through, which are really important to handle with care. So, it felt like a big deal to me, and I took it very seriously,” she elaborated.

“Beth continues to make brave choices, and I really liked that about her because she was still able to be brave in the face of adversity,” she added.

Working with Michael Roark

On working with Michael Roark, Applegate said, “I love Michael. He and I have worked together for years, so it was a fun reunion for me.”

Lessons learned from the screenplay

On the lessons learned from this screenplay, Applegate reflected, “There was the screenplay and then there was shooting the screenplay, and how quickly we had to shoot it. The shooting schedule felt like an endurance sport, and I learned a lot about my own capacity to work really hard.

“The script itself was really intense, especially for Beth. She goes through a lot of really intense things. It was a really demanding role,” she acknowledged.

Advice for young and emerging actors

For young and aspiring actors, Applegate said, “It’s a war of attrition. If you can be the last person standing, you will probably keep working.”

The digital age

On being a part of the digital age, Applegate said, “Honestly, that is really interesting. I feel like our industry is changing rapidly because there is so many media outlets now. There is this diffusion of media.”

“So, it’s an interesting thing to balance. On one hand, it can be really great (to hear the fan feedback, especially when they are loving the project) but it can also be intense,” she explained.

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Applegate said with a sweet laugh, “Building a Kingdom.”
