Regarding their latest single, “Break Up with Him,” Ramsey said, “That one started at a sound-check actually. That was the first time that all five of us wrote together. Somebody recorded it on their phone and a couple of nights later, around 2 a.m. in South Carolina in a van, and everybody was asleep. I had the idea for a one-sided song conversation and Trevor was awake in the back of the van with a guitar, and I was whispering the song to keep everybody from waking up, and I said it in a sneaky kind of tone, and that’s how it came about. It’s really fun to play live, and it is a good recommendation of who we are.”
Two of their other songs that they have penned are also charting on the Billboard country charts, including Blake Shelton’s “Sangria” and Kenny Chesney’s “Save it for a Rainy Day.” “They just keep happening and it’s just insane that we get to double-dip in the writing world and as artists,” he said. “We are living this whirlwind and we are just holding on, trying to keep up.”
Old Dominion has performed shows in New York in such venues as Irving Plaza with country singer Chase Rice and at Joe’s Pub. “There is definitely a market in New York City for country music,” he said.
They had nothing but kind words for Kenny Chesney and being a part of “The Big Revival” tour. “Any chance we get to share a stage with somebody like that is great. Kenny is an icon and we can just learn every night by standing on the side of the stage and watching him. He knows how to command a crowd and connect with his audience. We stand there every single time we play with him, and watch and learn,” he said.
Ramsey revealed that their band name was derived from the nickname of the state of Virginia, especially since many of the Old Dominion band-mates are from there. “We wanted something that showed our roots and that is what we landed on,” he said.
He listed songstresses Brandy Clark, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift as his dream female collaboration choices. “We have been friends with Brandy for a really long time. We have written songs with her and have watched her grow too. We are all so proud of her,” he said.
