Emmy-nominated producer and actor Nick Theurer chatted about his new movie “The Way Out,” and being a part of the digital drama series “The Bay.”

‘The Way Out’

“The Way Out” will be released worldwide on February 10, 2023, via Terror Films. It is from writer and director Barry Jay, and it stars Jonny Beauchamp (“Penny Dreadful”), Mike Manning (“Teen Wolf”, “Days of Our Lives,” “This is Us”), Ashleigh Murray (“Riverdale”), and Sherri Shepherd (“Life is Perfect”).

“It was honestly a game-changer for me, and it was revolutionary for me,” he said. “I was approached by this by Carl Rumbaugh, our other producer in mid-2020, and I thought it had great bones. We reinvented and changed it a little bit to make a little less slasher and more dark drama. It really hit home, especially the side of sexual abuse and everything that it goes through mentally,” he elaborated.

“Barry Jay really created something so special and once I read it, I instantly wanted to be a part of it. Whenever I try to do a project, I solely want to do it if it’s going to be something different, and if it’s something that’s going to make a chance. Once ‘The Way Out’ was presented to me, I knew it was going to make a difference and it is going to get people talking and it will bring up the subject of sexual abuse and alcoholism.”

In “The Way Out,” he plays the character Brent. “I like how Brent was very well-grounded but still I was able to play both sides: someone who is recovering (where I’ve never gotten to be in someone’s shoes like that before), and it was interesting being coached by Barry because he dealt with alcoholism and going to AA meetings. It was really powerful to hear his story in how to be that character.”

“At first, it was small, fun little role and after a while, I was the catalyst to what causes Johnny’s character to spiral and go out of control, so that was a lot to take on,” he said.

For viewers, he hopes that they can “rely on their friends and family to help them process things.” “I hope this inspires them to find the better solution and the better path without violence and anger,” he said.

“This is a film that showcases how damaging sexual abuse can be, and how prevalent it is even among family members. It is actually a big thing that people don’t talk about, and more light needs to be shed on that. Drug usage and alcoholism are usually caused by things like this, and it needs to get stopped at the source. It’s about ending that cycle and getting them help,” he added.

‘The Bay’

Theurer also serves as a supervising producer of the hit digital drama series “The Bay,” and he plays Officer Flores in Season 7. “I started as an associate producer and moved my way up,” he said.

“That was a blast, and thankfully, I am surrounded by a good team because I had some fun filming on ‘The Bay’ as well. My character was such a dick but he was a lot of fun to play, and I had great direction doing so. It was quite a fun time to play opposite A Martinez and Tristan Rogers. It was intimidating but I definitely feel that it brought out my better side,” he explained.

Plans for the future

“We have a lot of projects coming up, a few films,” he said about his future plans. “They are going to be fun. Also, I am trying to save an animal sanctuary,” he said.
