Country singer-songwriter Tiera Kennedy chatted about her new single “Jesus, My Mama, My Therapist.”

‘Jesus, My Mama, My Therapist’

On her latest single, she said, “We wrote this song on a writers retreat which is my favorite way to write. Emily Landis threw out the title and the chorus just fell out. We wrote it about being in a small town and not being able to trust just any ole body with your business.”

“Once you tell one person, the whole town knows. I think we’ve all got that person or group of people we can go to when we’re going through something and they’ll give us good advice and won’t judge us, for me that’s ‘Jesus, My Mama, and My Therapist’,” she explained.

Music and songwriting influences

Regarding her music and songwriting inspirations, she said, “Real life inspires my music the most. I’ve just finished my first ever album and so many of the songs started from just talking about what I was going through in the moment. Although there are some more personal songs, I think it’s relatable for a lot of people no matter what walk of life you’re on.”

The digital age

On being a country artist in the digital age, now with streaming, technology, and social media being so prevalent, she said, “I’m not going to lie it can be quite exhausting but I do my best to keep up.”

“Sometimes I get consumed with trying to keep up with trends and make sure I’m posting as often as I should but now I’m just trying to have fun with it,” she admitted.

“We’ve come up with a fun dance for my song ‘Jesus, My Mama, My Therapist’ and it’s been cool seeing everyone post their videos. I also really love home decor and just being home in general haha, so I’ve been loving sharing more of that side of my life as well,” she added.

Future plans

On her future plans, she shared, “There’s definitely more music coming. I’ve just finished my debut album, I’m so proud of it and can’t wait for everybody to hear it.”

Success

Regarding her definition of the word success, she said, “Obviously winning awards, radio hits, and playing arenas is the end goal, but I got into music because I had something to say.”

“I want people to be able to listen to my music and feel heard, while having a good time. So, if I can continue to do that for the rest of my life, that’s success to me,” she said.

Dream duet choices in music

Kennedy listed Dolly Parton and Shania Twain as her dream duet choices in music.

“Dolly Parton is definitely at the top of the list for me,” she exclaimed. “I would be on top of the world if that happened. I’d also love to collaborate with Shania. She has been such a champion of me and my career so I think getting to do a song together would be a full circle moment.”

Closing thoughts on her new single

Kennedy remarked about the tune, “My favorite kind of music to write is whatever gets people singing and dancing! I love getting to play this song live and see everybody in the audience singing along to that chorus at the top of their lungs. It’s the best feeling.”
