“I am so honored to be nominated for Choreography here at the Chita Rivera Awards tonight,” she said.
“I worked with Chita Rivera, I knew her, and she was a huge part of the ‘Fosse’ world that I know really well. I also got to work with her on ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood,’ which was my last Broadway show as a performer,” she elaborated.
“So, I got to know Chita Rivera really well, and she was the pinnacle. She sat on top of the mountain,” Lewis said.
Shannon Lewis on the late but great Chita Rivera
“Chita was the most talented, the most technical, the most incredible storyteller/star/dancer. To be nominated for this award means the world to me,” she admitted.
“It’s the biggest honor you can get in New York as a dancer or choreographer from the dance community, so it means the absolute world to me,” she elaborated.
Lessons learned from ‘Just in Time’
On the lessons learned from this show, she reflected, “The show has a lot of urgency in it because Bobby Darin did not live long, so I learned how not to sweat the small stuff.”
“Also, to try and enjoy each day, and not think too far ahead,” she added.
Closing thoughts on ‘Just in Time’
For viewers and fans, she remarked, “I hope viewers get to see that choreography is storytelling tool for musical theatre. Jonathan Groff is a such a good example of how you can tell a story like a monologue in our show.”
“The vocabulary that I created is a really storytelling tool for our show, and I hope that the public can see that because not everybody knows that about choreography, and I am really proud of that,” she concluded.
