Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” This quote applies to Karl Kilb IV.

Can you tell us about your upcoming concert? (What can we expect)

At my upcoming concert on May 3 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, I will be performing original compositions, including music I’ve already released, “Heart” and “Dawn,” as well as some new pieces.

The concert will consist mostly of solo piano pieces and also include a piano trio with violin and cello featuring compositions I wrote from 2020 to the present.

What motivates you each day as a musician?

Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing piano at five years old, and it has always been a way for me to express myself.

I rarely have to motivate myself to play or practice. Music is something I am so passionate about that it has become second nature to just walk over to the piano, sit down, and play.

Were your parents an influence on you growing up? (if yes, how so)

My parents have been extremely influential in my life as both role models and supporters.

From an early age, they instilled in me and my two younger siblings the importance of faith and family, and they always lead by example, showing us that hard work, discipline, and doing what you feel passionate about has its rewards.

They introduced me to the piano at a young age, arranging lessons for me when I was in kindergarten. When they saw how much I loved playing, they made sure I continued my lessons and nurtured my interest in music.

As I got older, I joined my school’s concert and jazz bands to learn clarinet and saxophone. My parents supported me in studying music in high school and college and pursuing it as a career.

How does it feel to be a part of the digital age? (now with streaming, technology, and social media being so prevalent)

The digital age of music provides a plethora of opportunity and information for music makers and listeners, but with that also comes distractions and the challenge of standing out in a crowded field.

Streaming has democratized the music industry, but now thousands of songs are released into the ether every day, competing for attention and playing time.

In many ways, technology has streamlined music-making and made it more efficient, but to me, there is no substitute for going to a live concert and experiencing music with an audience.

Can you tell us about your Greek heritage?

I am very proud of my Greek heritage and it continues to be extremely influential in my life and my music.

My grandfather’s family on my mother’s side came from Larnaca, Cyprus, and immigrated to America in the mid-1950s. Their courageous endeavor in the hopes of better opportunities and prosperity has always been very inspiring to me.

Greek culture, from the food to the language, impacts my music and even influenced me to minor in philosophy in college. The pillars of Greek culture that resonate with me the most are community, history, and faith.

What do your plans for the future include?

My love for music is probably stronger now than it has ever been. I am composing for solo piano, as well as for orchestras and concert bands.

I aim to continue to perform my music globally and build on my film scoring career, as I showcase my work and help others tell their stories.

I am also currently notating all of my pieces and releasing sheet music so others can play my music. In addition to composing, recording, and performing music, I also teach piano and clarinet to people of all ages and skill levels.

Were there any moments in your life or career that have helped define you?

I remember playing a medley of my compositions at a middle school talent show. It was the first time I had played my pieces in front of people outside of my family.

The encouraging feedback I received from my classmates and teachers gave me strength to keep pursuing composition.

Throughout my musical journey, I have been blessed to have the support of teachers, friends, and my family.

What is your advice for young and aspiring musicians?

I believe the best kind of music comes from a place of authenticity. The beauty of the present music industry is that anyone in the world can hear your song and become a supporter.

I spend more time focusing on my craft and composing than on how to crack the new streaming algorithm and social media hack.

Learning music is a process. It’s important to continue to learn and grow, constantly exposing yourself to different styles of music and techniques.

What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)

Success to me is not measured in wealth or material things. Success is simply being able to express my creativity and consistently striving to be the best I can be in all aspects of my life.

I have many short-term and long-term goals that keep me going, and always at the center of it all is my faith, family, and music.
