Joshua Bergasse, choreographer of the Broadway musical “Smash,” chatted about his 2025 Chita Rivera Award nomination for his work on the new show.
The music is by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and a book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin.
Bergasse shared that he is thrilled to be a part of the new musical “Smash.”
Chita Rivera nomination for ‘Outstanding Choreography’ for ‘Smash’
Bergasse has been nominated for “Outstanding Choreography in a Broadway Show.”
“I am so thrilled to be here. This is my favorite event of the season,” he admitted about his 2025 Chita Award nomination. “I love being with this community; it is so special.”
Bergasse continued, “The Chita Rivera Awards are important to me because they involve the dancing community coming together and celebrating each other. It really is the most wonderful event.”
All funding and proceeds from the Chita Rivera Awards benefit the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation Scholarship Fund and support the creation of a new Chita Rivera Training Scholarship.
2025 Tony nomination for Bergasse
If his Chita Rivera Award nomination wasn’t enough, Bergasse has also been nominated for a 2025 Tony Award for “Best Choreography” for his work on “Smash.” This marked his second career Tony nomination (his first was for “On the Town” back in 2015). “To be nominated for a Tony is so great,” Bergasse exclaimed.

On working with Robyn Hurder, Caroline Bowman, and the rest of the cast and ensemble of “Smash,” Bergasse said, “They are the absolute best! Having a triple threat like Robyn Hurder is so rare on Broadway, and it is so lovely to be working with her and the cast.”
