Three-time Emmy award-winning actor Maurice Benard chatted about his latest Emmy nomination for “General Hospital,” “The Milestone Tour,” and being a part of the film “Trials to Triumph.”
He is known worldwide for his portrayal of Sonny Corinthos on the hit ABC soap opera “General Hospital.”
2023 Daytime Emmy nomination
On being nominated for yet another Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series,” Benard said, “It feels really good. My Emmy reel had the bipolar storyline in it.”
“It’s always an honor to be nominated. The nominees are incredibly talented. All of them my friends, most have been on ‘State of Mind.’ To be nominated for a bipolar story means everything,” he exclaimed.
Particularly impressive about Benard is that this marks his 10th career Emmy nomination, and his mantel already holds three Emmy trophy wins.
Emmy reel
Regarding his Emmy reel, he said, “The bipolar storyline was done so early in the year; I didn’t think anyone would remember it. I knew I was proud of it when I did it because it’s as close to bipolar as I’ve ever played, and my wife, Paula, would vouch for that.
“We watched it together, and Paula told me ‘that’s as close as she had seen.’ We will see what happens,” he said.
“My scene partner, Cynthia Watros, was great in those scenes too,” he added. “It was too much art imitating life. If we do end up winning, it would be because of the bipolar storyline.”
‘The Milestone Tour’
Yesterday, it was announced that Benard will be a part of “The Milestone Tour,” produced by Coastal Entertainment, where he will visit 14 cities as part of in-person fan events later this year.
“It has been a good 30 years,” he admitted. “I love doing these fan events, even though they may be stressful,” he said. “I think I am in a different place now. If I can do ‘The View,’ I think I can do anything.”
On Saturday, September 2nd, Benard will be at the Funny Bone in Albany, New York, while on Monday, September 4, he will be at the Stress Factory in New Jersey.
‘Trials to Triumph’ film
He spoke about being a part of Freddie Stevenson’s inspirational sports documentary “Trials to Triumph.”
This movie follows the story of Freddie Stevenson from his meteoric rise through high school and college football to a chaotic life afterwards that led him to reinvent himself and rise up all over again.
“I did this film for Freddie Stevenson called ‘Trials to Triumph,’ and it was amazing… how he lived as a boy and where he ended up. I just saw the film and it is amazing. I am so proud of Freddie for just doing the hard work, trying to help people, and his wife is unbelievable, I told him that. His wife is incredible, she reminds me of my own wife.”
“In Freddie’s film, I went deep. More deep than I would normally go,” he said. “They did a really great job putting this documentary together, and getting all the interviews, and all of those things. It wasn’t easy, I could imagine. I just love those great stories,” Benard added.
Eileen Davidson on MB ‘State of Mind’
Benard also discussed having two-time Emmy award-winning actress Eileen Davidson (“The Young and The Restless” and “Days of Our Lives”) on his “MB State of Mind” podcast on mental health. “Eileen was out-of-this-world good. I couldn’t believe it,” he exclaimed.
“I love when people get deep, and Eileen got really deep in her conversation. Eileen truly was an open book, and I loved having her on ‘State of Mind’,” he acknowledged.
They talked about everything from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” soap operas, mental health, relationships, and bipolar disorder, among other topics.
