Marvel’s lineup of television properties is about to expand.
Variety reports that the ABC network Freeform has a straight-to-series order for Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. Cloak and Dagger are Marvel heroes Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen who gain their powers from an experimental drug. Tyrone has the power to “cloak” individuals in dark, shadowy matter, while Tandy can project light “daggers.”
In the comics, Cloak and Dagger have teamed up with Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers on numerous occasions.
The series is being billed as a “teenage love story,” which fits perfectly with the programming currently on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). Shows like Pretty Little Liars and The Secret Life of the American Teenager will reach the same demographic as Cloak and Dagger.
Marvel Studios and ABC Signature Studios will co-produce the series. A search is underway for a writer.
Cloak and Dagger will join a roster of Marvel television programs that includes Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter on ABC, and Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones on Netflix. ABC is working on a spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. called Marvel’s Most Wanted, along with a mystery project from John Ridley. Luke Cage is the next Marvel Netflix property set to launch September 30.
