First announced on The View and later confirmed on Marvel’s official website, a new comic, THOR, will premiere in October. However, the protagonist will be a female who becomes worthy of wielding the mighty enchanted hammer. The current protagonist (whom we’ll call Thor for simplicity’s sake) reportedly becomes unworthy of holding it, so the power is passed on to another.
So far nothing is known about who this female will be — she will be a totally new character within the Marvel Universe.
The series writer will be Jason Aaron, known for titles like Ghost Rider and Wolverine. He made an important distinction with this new character: “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
The only big question that remains is how what the current Thor will be called once he loses his hammer.
This is the latest in a push by Marvel to include more comic book titles starring female superheroes. This new Thor will join the likes of Kamala Khan — the new Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Captain Marvel.
